?Breaking free? of High School Musical: A Resonant Cry of the World
We have all wanted to express everything we experience into words.
Words, after all, are some of the most powerful concepts in existence. When we assign a word to mean something, we are given the power to at least begin understanding it.
And understanding is often the key to eliminating fear.
For is it not said that men fear that which they do not understand?
Words also allow us to convey what we feel. It is at least a step in sharing our experiences with the community around us.
However, sometimes plain sentences and narrations do not seem enough for us to express ourselves.
Sometimes we need not to let other people know but we need to let them feel what we mean.
That is what songs and poems are for.
Songs convey their meanings through the subtle changes in the rhythm, tone, and other aspects of the music.
Other than that, the lyrics often say out front or play with the situation being expressed.
The lyrics and the music together convey the whole message of the composer.
A song can drive you to anger, it can cause you to cry, it is known to induce euphoria, and a song can touch your soul.
The song ?Breaking Free? from ?High School Musical? is no different.
It starts slowly, like a toddler taking his first steps. The slow and soft start speaks to the listener of reminiscence, of sadness.
The lyrics speak of innermost feelings of unfair treatment and misunderstanding.
They also speak of separation and heartache.
The first part of ?Breaking Free? presents a dilemma. It shows the problem of being able to break free from those who wish to separate us from our love.
Do we dare to remove ourselves from the negativity of the ones who antagonize?
This dilemma is not easy to answer; many people have discovered that rejecting the world in its entirety has some dire consequences.
Some people have tried to escape the reality of their problems by burrowing into commonly drug-induced dreams.
Some have found that dream worlds are much better than reality and choose to nourish their dream selves and forget their real needs.
The song, however, tells of how one can actually break free if he/she only had some help.
The unity of two persons in love can be stronger than any categorization and judgment that the world around them may give.
Within another person, we may be able to find the strength required to fight back.
We need not escape reality, but we can learn to take stand against it.
We only need some source of strength in order to help us do this.
Sometimes, the source of strength we are looking for may be found in a person who needs us for the same purpose.
We all get our strength from another person no one can deny this.
They do say that no man is an island.
Now many people may misinterpret the words ?Breaking Free? as escaping and running away from the world.
In the song ?Breaking Free? the words mean being able to show the ?real? you to the world.
It means being unafraid of the criticisms you might receive and just be you.
After all, man is a paradox, nobody can classify somebody else, for man is both hero and fool, both good and evil, both analytical and artistic.
All that is required is that we be true.
