If you are thinking of having a baby, visit a gynecologist. She will take a detailed history, examine you thoroughly and get certain tests done to help identify any risk factors you might have. Your blood will be tested for rubella according to which it will be decided whether you need immunization against it, for although the infection is generally mild for the mother, it may cause serious malfunctions in the baby. If you are a diabetic or hypertensive or sugar levels and BP will have to be controlled before you decide on a pregnancy. Your husband and you will be advised to stop drinking and smoking and, in general, adopt a healthy lifestyle for at least 3 months before conception so that good quality eggs and sperms are produced and you will have a healthy baby.

If you are pregnant, do not smoke. I feel smoking is one of the many factors known to retard foetal growth. Women who smoke have lower rates of fertility. Babies born of smoker mothers are likely to be of low birth weight, could be mentally retarded and have increased risk of lifelong health problems, such as brain damage, cerebral palsy and behavior problems.

if you are planning your pregnancy …get yourself mentally prepared..there are lot of experiences like baby kicks,,,situations where u want to but will not be able to indulge in physical relation because of your body, morning sickness, weight issues etc..but if you are mentally prepared for all this then the whole pregnancy will become a joy ride…so try to enjoy the situation to the fullest

My hubby and I are planning to have a baby next year. I am quite excited about it but I'm also worried due to my health. I am an asthmatic and sometimes my asthma attacks can be quite bad. I was hospitalised once. I carry my ventolin inhaler in my bag wherever I go. It's my life saver.

My main concerns are:

1. What if I get frequent attacks during my pregnancy?

2. What if I get an attack during labour?

To all mothers out there, do you know of any friends or relatives who were in this same situation? It would be great if you can share it with me.

I have late onset asthma.  I didn't get it until I was 16, and then I had frequent attacks.  Oddly enough, I didn't have a single problem with it during pregnancy and since then it has mellowed out to where I only have issues if I am active during very warm, humid days.

I would let your doctor know about your concerns.  Find out if the medications you are on are safe to use while pregnant or even if you should switch your medication before trying to.  Some medications need to be out of your system before trying to conceive.  Are there any homeopathic remedies for asthma?

I haven't had an episode in so long, I'm kind of out of the loop, sorry, not a lot of help, huh?

I'm not sure if there's any homeopathic remedies for asthma, Diane but I did a research on asthmatic moms and it says if you took medication for your asthma before you became pregnant, especially if your asthma was well controlled, you may be tempted to stop taking your medication out of fear that it might harm the fetus.

The risk to the fetus from most asthma medications is tiny compared to the risk from a severe asthma attack. Moreover, women with asthma that is uncontrolled are more likely to have complications during pregnancy. Their babies are more likely to be born premature, to be small or underweight at birth, and to require longer hospitalization after birth. The more severe the asthma, the greater the risk to the fetus. In rare cases, the fetus can even die from oxygen deprivation.

I am more worried now after reading it because my asthma is quite serious, especially during cold weather! I tried to refrain from certain foods which may trigger my asthma but I can't control the weather. I hope my pregnancy will go smoothly when the time comes.

I'm so sorry, Nazreen,  Hopefully your doctor will have some great advice, maybe something new that wasn't listed on the web - researching on the web always brings out the worst of the worst scenarios for me.

I don't know what the weather is like out there, but can you plan to conceive towards the end of the colder months?  Then the majority of the pregnancy will be in the warmer months when there is less risk of an asthma attack.

I don't know if this helps any, but pregnancy does some pretty interesting things to your body … my asthma is induced by humidity and MILK.  I am allergic to milk, I can eat milk based products in moderation, but to drink it makes me sick and can bring on an asthma attack.  I have had the allergy all my life. Here is the interesting part … when I was pregnant I got horrible cravings for milk!  I would be sitting with the kids in my group home at lunch and suddenly WANT milk.  It was the oddest feeling, since I have never really had a taste for milk to begin with.  So one day I decided to grab a small carton in the lunch room and I drank it … it satisfied the craving, and I didn't get sick.  So I tried it again the next day, same result.  I drank a small carton of milk almost everyday of my pregnancy and didn't get sick!  Well, at least until the last month.  When my cravings stopped, so did the immunity - LOL.  Fortunately I didn't have too bad a reaction.  My OB/GYN said the baby needed the nutrients and that is why it didn't have any effect on me.
