If you're at all phobic about germs, it's probably best you don't read this! No wonder I can't shift the flu this time around. Every time I think it's gone, it comes back worse.

Why the heck do people sneeze and not cover their faces anyway with a handkerchief?!  I think that's revolting. Ok, the odd one might sneak up on you, granted, but really… is it only mums that ever seem to have tissues close at hand? Because in my experience ( ie the ones doing the gross sleeve wiping of their noses I've seen in public places), men appear to be more guilty of it than women.

A single sneeze expels 100,000 droplets of germs into the air at 90mph. Individual droplets get transferred to handles, rails and other areas frequently held or touched. Up to 10 per cent of all commuters will come into contact with an area infected by that one sneeze, Dr Henderson calculated.

In the busiest areas, such as underground station escalators, this amounts to about 150 people during rush hour, he said.

ewwwww! Yell

I tell my girls to sneeze into the inside of their elbow if they have nothing else to use … only because they sneeze in their hand and then hold mine, or touch a toy, or touch something they will share with someone else … I also carry a lot of purell.

Oh tell me about it! I work with kids and they carry a lot of germs! They sneeze and cough without covering their mouths! I told them over and over again to cover their mouths and they tend to forget. Also, they like to hold my hands when I bring them to specialist classes! Oh dear….I make sure I wash my hands thoroughly with soap! We have to take these things seriously especially when HFMD is on the rise!

In kids I can excuse it because we don't expect them to be prepared as much but in grown adults?! It's ridiculous, they should know better.

My mum used to freak if we sneezed and didn't have a hankie. She always had one tucked up her sleeve, literally, if she didn't have pockets or a handbag nearby. My mum was faster on the draw with that tissue than Jesse James, ha!

And yuck, I hadn't even thought about the kids hanging on to the school staff's hands LOL.

I go through tissues like nobody's business … anymore I am lucky to have wet wipes and purell on me :)  my grandma used to keep tissue tucked in her sleeve as well!  and I see little old ladies with it tucked into their watch bands :)

when I sneeze, I plug my nose … I don't know why and everyone tells me it's bad for me, but it keeps from from spraying (LOL)  and it hurts to sneeze without plugging my nose.  weird, yeah, I know ;)

LOL, I've always heard that it's bad for you but I wonder why it is? Apart from just the fact you're not expelling whatever's irritating your nose in the first place. Is it one of those “your face will stick like that if the wind changes” urban myths?

I mean how bad can it really be physically to hold in a sneeze…it's so much better than inflicting it on everyone else around you, geesh!

I have heard that you can blow out your eardrum doing it.  My ears pop when I do, but when I don't hold my sneeze, it feels like my throat is going to tear open!  lol  fortunately, even with my horrible allergies, I don't really sneeze all that often … coughing, OTOH, I do … which I am sure has it's own nasty statistic on germs.

but that is where the purell comes in handy again :)

Funny enough, I pop my ears all the time when they're blocked but my husband told me the very same thing could happen if you do that. I'd never heard that before and here it is twice in a few days.

So I went looking for facts on holding in a sneeze and that really is true! In fact it can cause worse things apart from bursting an eardrum,  like a brain aneurysm too.
