Be careful with OTC medicines when pregnant

Something as simple and everyday as popping an aspirin you may not give much thought to, but if you're pregnant it shouldn't be taken. When I was pregnant, if I had a headache I suffered it rather than take anything. Some assume over the counter medications are somehow less potent and perfectly safe under any circumstances but that simply isn't the case.

According to HealthDay News, the American Academy of Family Physicians offers these safety guidelines about medications and pregnancy:

  • Don't take any medicine or herbal supplement without checking with your doctor.
  • Try not to take any medicine during your first trimester of pregnancy, when your baby is most likely to be affected.
  • If you are having pain, acetaminophen is usually safe for pregnant women to take for a short period. But you should first check with your doctor.
  • Don't take aspirin while you're pregnant.
  • Don't take an NSAID — such as Advil, Motrin or Aleve — while you're pregnant, particularly during your third trimester.

Better safe than sorry! )

Those tips are very useful, Kay. I was diagnosed with weak bladder 3 years ago and I am still on daily medication. I did ask my urologist if I can continue taking them since I'm planning to have a baby next year. He said he needs to check with the gynaecologist to make sure it's safe for the baby. I'll be consulting him tomorrow for a review and hopefully he has some answers for me.

Good thinking on your part there, Nazreen! Any update for us on how it went? Did he say you could still take them in the meantime?

Everything went well Kay except that there is bacteria in my urine. I had to give another sample of my urine for further test. If there is still bacteria, my doctor will prescribe antibiotics for me. He told me that the medication is safe to be taken during pregnancy but the risk of getting urine retention is high due to my horse-shoe kidney and the positioning of the growth of the baby. Knowing I'm a worrier, he told me not to think too much about it.

In this case, I'll just leave it to God. I must stay positive and I believe all will go well.
