5 power tips for beating exhaustion as a new mom (full article)

I thought this was pretty useful, even for the not-so-new mom …

in summary …

1. pace yourself - focus on getting one thing done at a time

2. sleep when baby sleeps - getting rest is NOT a waste of time

3. take care of YOU - making sure you get a little “recharge” time for yourself is crucial, shoot for 20-30 minutes a day

4. make friends with other new moms - sometimes knowing we are not alone helps us feel a little better

5. eat well - choose healthy foods that will increase your energy and stay away from foods that cause you to crash and burn

Yes I agree, Diane especially point number 3. The problem with me is I always put my hubby's needs before my own. And I think I'll do the same when we have children. This makes me so exhausted that sometimes it affects my health. I realised that my needs are just as important as the rest of my family members. I should give myself a little treat once a week. Pamper myself to a spa, pedicure or set aside some time shopping with friends. Wink

The “sleep when they sleep” should be numero uno on the list. It's so tempting to clean up or do other chores but resist! Sleep's much more important and you'll regret not doing so if you're up all night with them. At the very least take a nice long bath and relax.

Good list, diane! :)

if you do it now, you will probably do it then too :)  of course then you will not only be putting hubby first, but also child!!  it's SO important to take some time to renew - even if it's nothing more than a long hot bath … or lets face it!  just a shower alone!!  lol

I thought it should be number one as well!  I really enjoyed the naps that we would take together … usually laying on the couch with baby on my chest … I miss those days Smile

I found too, that in the very early days, if they napped well, it usually meant a difficult night in store for me!  lol  so I really needed to take advantage of it then ;)

Not so sure where I read this, probably from a zen book I've  read before, but it mentioned about one very basic philosophy in life that can benefit us all.

“When I'm hungry, I eat. When I'm thirsty, I drink. When I'm tired, I rest. When I'm happy, I laugh. When I'm sad, I cry.”

So with this, it's good that we always listen to what our body is telling us so that when we're tired, we should take a break and rest.

definately words to live by, Nazreen.  I really believe that if you listen, your body will tell you what it needs.  Even with cravings during pregnancy.  I never would have tried to drink milk if I hadn't had such strong cravings for it while I was pregnant (of course I pay for it now with calcium deposit kidney stones!  lol).

I agree, it's a great quote! We spend so much time builidng our lives around the hands of a clock instead of our physical and mental needs, don't you think?

Diane's spot on about listening to our bodies. I find when I keep going and going and going without a break and little sleep, my immune system falls apart. I pick up coughs and colds and bugs at the drop of a hat. Even just in the last few months, it's been like that. But when I stop trying to do an impression of the Energiser bunny and actually begin taking time to do basic things like eat right and drink more Vitamin C, I feel much better!

Our bodies are so much smarter than our brains when it comes to knowing what we need. Right now I'm glugging down orange juice with mango and bottles of cranberry juice like mad, but it's working.

oooh! have you tried those Naked fruit drinks, Kay?  They have some wonderful flavors and they pull out the essentials in each fruit.  I have been feeling a little run down myself and they have a line of juice that is antioxident.  my daughter drinks the energy line before a game and they also have superfood, probiotic and just plain OJ!  lol  they great part is, it's all natural!  a pound of fruit in each bottle.

That's interesting, Diane. I should try the naked fruit drinks one of these days. I drink Brand's Essence of Chicken when I feel tired. For those not in the know, it's a herbal drink derived from the essence of chicken which, is free from fats, cholestrol, preservatives, artificial colouring and flavouring, and low in sodium. It tastes yucky but it gives you a boost of energy and also good for the health. Laughing

that's something I haven't heard of.  How do you keep yourself drinking it when it has a horrible taste?  I have a sensitive gag reflex when it comes to foods I dislike, I couldn't choke down something I don't like if I tried!

Well first of all, my dad is someone who drinks any yucky stuff so long as it's good for his health but my mom is otherwise. I guess I take after my dad. Hmmm come to think of it, I'm the only one who takes after my dad…lol! I've drank all kinds of yucky stuff…even crocodile skin which is boiled…it's said that the juice is good for athmatics and frankly speaking, it's hard to swallow!! I even had Yakult drink beside me just to wash it down.

Well, I survived!! lol! When I take in these yucky drinks, I don't think of the taste. Just close my eyes and swallow. I'm used to it now. Wink
