I thought this was an interesting piece published Dec 1 in the Psychiatric Times. It's about an experiment using mice where they genetically removed the GNAA receptor.  It's a fairly technical 2 page article but I'm a bit on the geeky side anyway so I like things that make you go “hmmm…”. )

The researchers decided to focus on the GABAA receptor for an important reason: the GABAA receptor is one of the principal targets for the action of many neuroactive products of steroid hormones that are usually called “neurosteroids.”

Altered neurosteroid levels have been associated with a wide variety of psychiatric illnesses, including premenstrual syndrome and postpartum depression. A large increase in levels of progesterone-derived neurosteroids occurs during pregnancy, then levels decline rapidly after birth. Understanding how these levels interact with the GABAA receptor biology turned out to be an important area of inquiry.

I get lost in the technical aspects of any paper … so I will ask this … do you know if there is a link between those that suffer from PPD and those that suffer also from PMS?  I bring it up only because  have a friend that has suffered from both pretty severely, and I really didn't have PPD and my PMS was rare - maybe once every 6 months.

I also have friends and relatives who got so depressed that they said that they even thought of throwing their babies out the window. Luckily, they didn't. Doctors and medical experts say that some factors increase your risk of depression during and after pregnancy. If you have a personal history of depression or any mental illness, or have a family history, then it follows that you'll have a higher risk of depression either from PMS or PPD.
