Tips to handle expressed breast milk

1. Ensure that breast milk sent from home is in bottles, labeled with the infants name and the date. Do not refreeze previously frozen breast milk

2. To avoid waste , encourage mothers to freeze small amounts rather than whole bottles in the event that a whole bottle is consumed.

3. Store breast milk in the freezer section of the refrigerator no longer than two weeks

4. Defrost frozen breast milk in the refrigerator. It can be warmed in a container of warm water for immediate use or be kept in the refrigerator for later use.

5. Refrigerate breast milk for up to 48 hours.

I am reminded of the days when I used to get milk exactracted and send it for my son, when he was hospitalized immediately after birth. There were so many instructions by the doctor and nurses, it was tough to keep account of the all.Breast milk is supposed to be very delicate and prone to infections and has to be handled with lot of care.
