Usually I'm a marketing man's nightmare and not brand loyal at all. I skip past the name brands if I can get more or less the same thing at a cheaper price or pick up whatever's on special that particular week. About the only thing I make a point of buying is White Lily flour -it really does make a difference in your baking with it being much softer than most.

Is there anything for the house you won't substitute if you can help it?

I'm pretty much the same, I always look for the offers and bargains, and don't just go for the bigger branded items.  However, I do try to support companies that have 'good' ethics, eg. against animal testing, good for the environment etc.. and might even pay a little more for some items.  One in particular is the Ecover washing and cleaning products.  They do cost more but do the job well and are better for the environment.  I've noticed these types of products are never on offer in the bigger supermarkets, as they know people will pay the price to use them.  However, they must be popular, because recently I've noticed that the supermarkets have started to introduced their own versions.  Of course, these are also cheaper, but I've decided to stick to the original ones.  They might cost a little more but by buying them, I believe they send out a good message.

I've never tried Ecover, loolarbelle. I'm glad to hear of your experiences with that are good though!

For some reason I always imagined the ecofriendly type products would be less potent than others but obviously I was wrong. I'll look at them next time I go shopping for that kind of thing. Thanks for the tip! :)

I use a lot of the eco friendly products as well - 7th generation is one of my favorite brands … but the one thing I choose not to live without is bleach.  I know, I know … it's not exactly eco friendly, but it has been shown to be safe when diluted, and I usually use it in a 1:4 combo.  I clean everything with it - the sink, counters, bathrooms, toilets, tables, the stove, my tables … I even use it to clean the mystery smudges my kids leave on the windows and sliding glass door (I do have to go over it with rubbing alcohol to clean the streaks).  I don't feel like my house has been de-germed unless I have bleached it!

I only have 2 other must have items when it comes to cleaning …

vinegar - gets that bacon or popcorn smell out of the microwave AND cleans all the residue off, amazing on soap scum, and I use it in the soccer laundry!

rubbing alcohol - for all my windows and mirrors

I use bleach straight mostly just down the toilet and sinks, Diane and diluted to mop the floor but I'll be trying the 4:1 solution. I was complaining earlier to my husband about how rubbish the all purpose stuff was I'd bought.

Daft question probably but do you need to rinse it off too or just let it air dry? I'm always scared with bleach I'll ruin something or I'll put it on the counters and the smell will taint the food. I do wash down the walls with it diluted sometimes though.

A cup of bleach and a cup of vinegar one after the other down the sink and bath plugholes helps stop it from getting clogged up with hair etc.

Vinegar on soap scum's new to me. I must try that!

You know what else vinegar is good for, the dog. Mine gets that wet dog smell very easily even when she's not been wet and I need to bath her nearly every week if I forget the vinegar rinse. She's a sensitive soul and it's part of her makeup but if I get a big jug of vinegar and pour that on her as a final rinse, it really does help keep that away longer. She smells of vinegar until she dries, right enough LOL.

An old lady told us as well to spritz just a little in their drinking water and it helps keep the fleas off them. Now I don't know if it's just coincidence or not but the week I started it I noticed a big difference in both the dogs. Because we're in the countryside, I need to comb them daily (flea collars are too strong for them) and there was definitely less. I've kept doing it anyway but the weather turned colder at the same time so it could be attributed to that.

I was told that using the bleach in a 1:4 ratio was diluting it enough to be safe for the kids (we used it in the cottages at the group home I worked in to clean everything each night after the kids went to bed).  I use it to spray the countertops after dinner each night and have never rinsed it afterward.  I haven't had it ruin any clothing or carpeting, not even the towels, but I haven't spilled any (surprisingly) so other than wiping it down or it coming into brief contact with kitchen towels, I can't say I have really tested it - lol.

I love it in my kitchen sink!  after I scrub it down, I fill the sink up with HOT water, pour in a cup of bleach and let it sit for 30 minutes.  I will also toss in my cutco cutting boards if they have stained with fruit, and let them soak as well.  makes my sink look almost brand new :)  since I started doing that I have found that the garbage disposal doesn't smell too, nice benefit!  lol

using vinegar on soap scum is a little laborous, but it works and you don't have the harsh fumes of toxic cleaners … of course, you DO have the sometimes harsh fumes of vinegar!  lol  I heat the vinegar in the microwave for a couple of minutes (which helps CLEAN the mic too) and then pour it into a spray bottle - hot vinegar works faster on the scum.  it takes a few applications if the soap scum is really bad, but then using it once a week usually keeps it under control for me.

I had never heard about putting it into the dogs water though … I wonder if that works on humans in fending off mosquitoes?!  I will defintely try the combo of bleach and vinegar in my oldest daughter's drains - that girl has more hair and her drains are always clogging!  I told hubby we needed to take out stock in liquid plumber becaues we were buying it so often … and we have to buy the professional grade to get it to work in her bathroom.

I'll get a new spray bottle then and give it a go now I know what I'm doing. Another thing bleach is good for is blinds, the wee narrow slatted ones. I've got them in the living room and between my husband's smoking and the kitchen being off that, it doesn't take long for them to get grimy and discolored.

I did mine today actually. I just toss them in the bath with some soapy water (usually I use the kind for dishes since it's got a degreaser too and is stronger than hand soap) and a good glug of bleach, probably about a cup and a half diluted in a bath about six inches deep.

Leave them soaking a couple of hours and don't have them all pulled up tight or it'll never get clean between all the slats. Fan them out best you can in the water. Normally I only do two at a time and reuse the water after the first ones.

I usually judge when to take them out by the color of the drawstring cords. If it's sparkling white, (my blinds are white), they're done. Stand them upright in the bath, holding with one hand and rinse them in the bath with the shower head. Then hang them over the washing line outside to drip dry. Or you can just take them outside one at a time (being careful not to drip on anything), fling them over the line, and hose them down to rinse them (my preferred method). They come up looking great. :)
