How do you freshen the house in winter?

With it being so cold where I am in winter, the doors and windows aren't open much. How do you keep things fresh around the house when it's freezing outside?

The family's complaining I'm choking them to death with Febreze and spray air freshener but I hate the house smelling stale. I need alternatives please. Keep in mind I have two dogs and a smoker too so it doesn't take much to get stale.

I've yet to find a decent plugin air freshner either although I like them. How they can claim they last 30 days I don't know. You're lucky if you can still smell it after 3 days, never mind 30. I've tried the ones with built in fans and everything but they're too dear to keep refilling all the time when they lose the fragrance quickly.

Have you tried Yankee Candle Company plug ins?  They are very strong smelling and I will usually open a new one, plug it in over night, and then unplug it and let it sit on a counter or table.  I plug it back in every other night or so, but the smell is usually too strong for me to handle it being plugged in all the time.

I also enjoy candles in the bathrooms and kitchen.  It helps keep the stale odors at bay.

and to be totally honest … I deal with the cold for short intervals to freshen the house naturally.  I LOVE the crisp clean air of winter and will open up windows and doors in very stale areas (bathrooms, laundry rooms, bedrooms) for an hour and then close everything up again.  I try to do this only when I can be home alone so I don't freeze everyone out of the house, but for me, it just has to be done.  I don't do well with sprays at all.

Nope, in fact I didn't know they did plugins Diane. Where do you buy them because I don't remember seeing them anywhere. Are they new? They sound perfect for what I need.Sprays like Febreze irritate my nose something terrible and I honestly don't spray a lot of it. We just all don't handle them very well in this house either.

Yesterday was quite mild here and it was a pleasure to get all the windows open and air the house! Unfortunately those kind of days are few and far between here though. It's not so much the cold I mind as the cost of heating it all back up again. Bear in mind we were at 5 degrees F the other day. In fact our neighbor had a burst pipe, it was that cold.

Thanks for the Yankee Candles tip! I'll look a bit closer next time I'm at the store.

Yankee Candles can be found at Bed Bath and Beyond, and they also have their own stores in malls all over the US …
