Dealing with pampered children is not a bed of roses. It entails a lot of patience, tact, diplomacy and a good understanding of child psychology. Here are a few tips to help deal with the spoilt brat.

1. Be firm: Once you realize the child is spoilt and needs to be dealt with, be firm in your behavior. Make him understand that if you say ‘no’ to something, it means ‘no’ and you will not relent with his crying or pleading. Be quiet but firm and after a few trials, junior will realize that you mean business.
2. Spend time: Children often become pampered because parents cannot spend much time with them, especially if both are working. As a result, they try to attract affection by making unreasonable demands or throwing tantrums. In such cases, it is advisable to spend quality time with the kids. Listen to their chatter, answer their queries. Do not try to compensate for your inability to be with them by buying expensive toys or chocolates. This spoils them further.
3. Do not preach: While trying to reform a pampered child, do not preach to them. Sit with him and try to understand why he is behaving in a particular way. If you only give harsh orders, he may become stubborn or adamant. Make him understand that his behavior is not desirable, and that both of you can work towards improving it. Also do not compare him unfavorably with his siblings or friend.
4. Be patient: Patience is at a premium while reforming a spoilt child. One cannot expect him to turn over a new leaf overnight. Do not hurry or over-cajole him; let him realize the flaws in his behavior and try to overcome them at his own pace. Enlist the help of other family members in your endeavor.
5. The power of praise: Last, but not least, praise his efforts at overcoming his weakness. Appreciate the good work he does and he is sure to respond. Appreciation is vitamin A and works wonders for child.

One need not throw up one’s hands if a child is spoilt or pampered. Handle him with care and he is sure to change, and both of you will enjoy an even better relationship.

Babies do require a certain amount of pampering, but I think these are some good techniques to deal with older children that could be considered to be a little “pampered” or “spoiled”. Being patient is one of the most important aspect, but some of the techniques could be used to avoid pampering in the first place, too!
