I had no problems breastfeeding my older son (who is now a teenager) but this time around things are proving a little more difficult.  I have read that it can be harder to breastfeed as you get older because your body is winding down from reproducing so milk supply can be affected.

All my family care nurse can tell me is to “keep trying” and to “persevere” which doesn't help much!

Hi Denise,

I've also has problems with breastfeeding and keeping my milk supply up.  There are a couple of articles on the site that might help..

Also, have you heard of Le Lechte League?  (Not sure if I have spelled that right) they can act as breast feeding consultants and give you free advice.  I know that here in Australia there is also the breast feeding association (I'm not sure where you are, don't know if that would be any help to you.)

I found that with feeding it was helpful to have someone who had more info that the regular nurse to help me through it.  Unfortunatley we have had to supplement with formula at night, and I'm still working at incrasing my supply.  One thing I found that did help a bit was to pump and to just keep pumping after no more milkw as produced for a good 2-5 minutes.  This stimulated the supply and helped it to increse.

You don't say what your problem is exactly, if you give us some more details I might be able to help more?

HiDenise, the web address for Le Leche League is http://www.llli.org

They really helped me, just be aware that they will push breastfeeding as really the only way… it's definitely worth a try and worth persevering with.. once you know HOW to persevere!

Good luck!

This is for sure that milk reproduction reduces as the woman approaches the later stage of her life. There are methods that are of some help, but the things just can't be normal, diet and medication can be tried to have little better results.
