Complications of Bottle Propping

Sometimes adults develop the habit of propping a bottle when the infant is lying down resting the nipple in the child's mouth. This is poor feeding habit and should not be done. When the bottle is propped, the infant is unattended and deprived of the benefits of contact with the mother. There is also risk of choking and aspirating , because the flow of milk into the mouth may be too rapid. Another complications of is an increased risk of ear infections(otitis media) .When the infants swallow while lying down, the milk or formula may enter the Eustachian tube . This seems to make infants more susceptible to developing ear infections.

Wow, didn't know this.  I have done a little bit of bottle propping, but never left the baby unattended.  Didn't know about the infection possibilities.. thanks for sharing!

(If you have any tips on how to feed the baby for ages without getting a sore arm.. I'd love to hear them!  When I'm doing the night feeds, anything that can help is appreciated.. I guess I bottle prop mostly when I'm really tired myself.)

Thanks for that great link Diane. I didn't even know that there's a pillow that can be used to support the baby while feeding, propping up, tummy time and just sitting.

When it's my turn, I'll also shop for a similar baby support pillow since this seems to be available only in the US.

Thanks for the offer Diane. I think I'll search in the shops here first. I'm afraid that the shipping from US to here might even be more expensive than the pillow. :)
