Safety Features You Should Look for on Children?s Bunk Beds
When your children no longer fit in their crib, it is time for you to shop for bigger, stronger, and more durable bed. It is time for you to buy children?s bunk beds.
Among several types of children?s bed, bunk beds are the most ideal if you want to keep 2 kids in one bedroom. Here, your children would be able to sleep on different bed without buying two individual beds that could occupy more space. Bunk beds will keep your children comfortably in their own ?territories? while enabling them to bond with each other.
Safety concerns
Each year, thousands of children are rushed to emergency rooms for treatment in injuries they have acquired from bunk beds. Although majority of these are only minor scratches and wounds, there are cases wherein children fall down from the beds while asleep that causes injuries. Other injuries are self-inflicted as a result of horseplay.
This is an obvious fact that should be considered when buying bunk beds. Of course there are ways to avoid these things from happening and the best way is: buying bunk beds with enough safety features that can keep your children from harm.
Guardrails ? When children go to sleep, they are pretty much unaware of their movements. This is just normal. What is not normal is when these children fall down from their beds in the middle of the night because the guardrails are not strong enough to support their weight.
Ideally, guardrails should either be bolted or securely attached on each side of the bed especially on the upper deck. And the guardrails should be strong enough to contain your children in the bed while sleeping. Some bunk beds with large guardrail spacing are not suitable for little kids. This would cause them to slip trough the rails and fall. Guardrails therefore should also have the right spacing in accordance to the age of your children.
Meanwhile, most bunk beds are sold with only one guardrail. If this is the case, you should place one side of the bed beside the wall. This will prevent your children from falling. Sometimes, bunk beds are bolted against the wall for added protection and strength. If you want to guarantee that the bed is sturdy, choose one with this feature.
Sturdy bed frames ?Bunk beds are commonly made from wood or steel tube. Either way, make sure that the bed is sturdy and the bed frames are strong. To make sure of this, shake the bed strenuously. If there is a significant movement, then you might consider looking for another one.
Safe ladders ? Some injuries occur at the ladder so make sure that the ladder is securely attached on the bed. The ladders should also have the right steps for your child.
Mattress foundation ? When mattress is attached to the bed, it should be secured and will fit perfectly. The bunk bed should have the right depth to keep the mattress in place. Or, the bed should have a place where the mattress can be attached.
Guardrails, sturdy bed frame, safe ladders, and mattress foundations are the 4 things you should check when you buy bunk bed. Although these come secondary after the design, make sure that they are all present to keep your children safe during and off-bedtime.
