Should I be horrified or ecstatic?

Today my 2 1/2 month old was crying.. I plopped him down on his bunny rug in the lounge room and toddled off to find a bottle or a dummy or something to stem the noise.

Whilst I was rummaging around my handbag in the foyer, I could hear him settle himself down.. I sighed with relief and wandered back to check on him, only to find his beautiful blue eyes transfixed by the television!

I still can’t work out if I’m delighted he has something else to focus on that will stop him crying without me having to use a pacifier, or if I’m horrified that he will turn into a couch potato and become fused to the sofa.  I honestly didn’t think he would become interested in the good old TV quite this young.

I think I’ll limit his TV time to an hour a day until I can work out what I really think about this unforseen turn of events.

I guess kids will always surprise you - I’m going to have to get used to it I guess.  :)

  1. LOL, well let’s put it this way. No need to panic! He’s going to watch TV like every other kid, isn’t he? At that age I remember my son being partial to the gardening shows, I think for the colors and so much more mellow on mum’s ears than cartoons.

If you’re going to let him sit there a moment in his baby chair while you grab a cuppa, eat or do something that needs attention, I don’t see the harm in it. You must you check on him frequently if he’s out of sight, especially if he’s recently been fed in case he’s sick and chokes. Just be sensible. It’s amazing how much you get done and how fast when you know you only have a limited amount of time with both hands free! Even just a few minutes lets you throw some laundry in without having to worry the noise of the machine will wake him.

What I do disagree with is people using the TV as a babysitter and sitting the kids in front of it for endless hours on end, dawn till dusk. As in all things, balance is key. He’s a long way from couch potato and sometimes you’ll even find he’ll doze off in the chair quite contentedly. Just keep the volume fairly low on the TV so it doesn’t startle him if an ad starts blasting out or there’s a sudden noise.

Anything that lets you go to the bathroom without having to tuck him under one arm, I’m all for it! LOL.
